Life cycle assessment of digital services

The methodology for assessing the environmental impact of digital services covers the environmental impact of manufacturing and operating hardware. It establishes the link between the use of basic digital resources (computing, memory, storage, transfer) by a software application and the resulting environmental impact. The methodology forms the methodological basis for the development of a test bench in the eco:digit research project funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK). With the help of the test bench, software can be tested on different virtualised hardware platforms and its life cycle assessment can be calculated.

EXCEL document ‘Exemplary application of the formulas’

This EXCEL document serves to explain the formulas from the above method sketch. Where appropriate, the mathematical formulas are included as graphics and the tables from the method sketch are shown (with different values where applicable). A copy template for the code allows it to be transferred to your own script (e.g. Python, PHP, Javascript).
