Considerations on the further development of the EU car label
With the goal to minimize the energy demand from electric cars and vans, this paper analyses how the car label could be redesigned to raise consumer awareness on BEV efficiency and, thereby, potentially increase the demand for vehicles with a lower energy consumption. Several possible base metrics for a car label are evaluated and final energy consumption shows best overall performance. The paper describes general design principles and presents five label design options from which the uniform energy label is considered the clearest, most intuitive option. For the uniform energy label, the paper proposes energy consumption classes based on vehicles registered in the EU from 2022 to 2024. Conceptual drafts of the label are presented for different powertrains and models. Moreover, the paper discusses potential further information to be provided by the car label.
