2025 Annual Report: All in flux

Research and consultancy for change

Shifting political landscapes, new challenges to climate action and environmental protection and changes in the institute’s organisational structure. Oeko-Institut’s 2025 Annual Report leaves no doubt that it was a year in which much was in flux – in society at large, in the environmental policy realm and in our scientific work. The report gives insights into key developments, selected projects and the institute’s strategic trajectory.

Global upheavals and new demands

The past year has been marked by profound political and global shifts. International cooperation is under pressure and multilateral institutions are increasingly faltering. At the same time, global greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise. Against this backdrop, our 2025 Annual Report highlights the responses needed to advance environmental and climate protection effectively in changing conditions. These include resilient alliances, pragmatic solutions, and policies that combine environmental goals with resilience, security, and economic sustainability.

Not letting up on sustainable development

Our annual report also makes it clear that the slowdown in progress on environmental, climate and resource protection must not be a reason to slow down. On the contrary: now more than ever, it is crucial to steer progress in the right direction – for example, in the expansion of renewable energy, the circular economy, energy efficiency, agricultural and food policy, or the renovation of buildings and the expansion of power grids. Even under difficult political conditions, Oeko-Institut continues to work on developing concrete and scientifically-based solutions to the major environmental challenges of our time.

Further development of the institute and insights into our research projects

In addition to political and technical developments, the annual report also looks at changes within the institute. 2025 was a year of substantial organisational development for Oeko-Institut: our organisational structure was expanded with the establishment of our subsidiary Oeko-Institut Consult GmbH. The non-profit association Oeko-Institut e.V. continues to focus on research projects, while the subsidiary clusters our consultancy activities. The report shows how the institute is hereby positioning itself to be more resilient for the future – without losing sight of its core objectives.

Selected projects from all our research divisions also illustrate the breadth of the institute’s remit and how scientifically-based solutions to the major environmental issues of our time are developed.
