Scenario-based analysis of GHG reduction and sink potentials for natural climate protection in the LULUCF sector and identification of synergies with biodiversity and other environmental goals

The aim of the project is to investigate the solution space for the implementation of climate protection goals in the LULUCF sector in terms of natural climate protection. Special focus is placed on the topics of forest, peatland and soil climate protection, taking into account synergies with biodiversity and other environmental goals.

In order to achieve this goal, five scenarios for the LULUCF sector are modeled on the basis of measures and instruments, taking agriculture into account. As an important result, potentials for natural climate protection are identified for each scenario, thus highlighting possible solutions. For discussions in the scientific and political environment, both at national and European level, the results are prepared in a targeted manner for communication with various addressees. In particular, the results lead to recommendations for action on how the LULUCF reduction targets can be achieved. This analysis takes into account synergies with biodiversity and other environmental targets and an assessment of the need for readjusting existing programmes and policies.
