Ensuring proper risk assessment of nanomaterials to establish a precaution-based regulatory framework for their production and use

The Institute for Applied Ecology (Öko-Institut) has contributed in the development of a standardisation process for nanomaterials on both international and European level. Efforts were being made to reduce the potential negative environmental and health impacts of such nanomaterials and apply a balanced use of the precautionary principle in the standardisation. One of the main functions of the project was to assist the regulating organisations “ISO” and “CEN” as well as the international OECD committee on nanomaterials in developing clearer standards, as well as offering recommendations for action, ex. defining nanomaterials or in approaching industrial waste containing nanomaterials. A further important aspect of the project was to provide information to European NGOs gained in the standardisation process and thus strengthen their influence in the process as well.
