Ecological and economic comparative calculations of household appliances

The research report examines the environmental and economic merits of replacing refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, tumble dryers and vacuum cleaners with new, highly efficient models. The aim is to develop recommendations for consumers as to whether they should continue to use their existing appliances or replace them with new, highly efficient models. Methodologically, the study is based on a simplified life cycle assessment and a life cycle cost analysis. Overall, the study shows that the decision for or against replacing appliances depends on many factors, including the specific energy consumption of the appliances, the intensity of use and the development of renewable energy.
