Climate protection measures in coastal regions and waters - Accounting, crediting and financing of blue carbon measures

The research project pursues the following objectives:

- Analysing the current role of blue carbon in the global climate architecture (negotiations and NDCs),

- Analysing opportunities and risks of different financing instruments for blue carbon measures, especially market-based approaches,

- Analysing the current coverage of oceans and coastal areas in greenhouse gas accounting under international and European regulations and discuss a potential extension of this accounting,

- Establishing a basis for the development of new and assessment of existing climate protection measures in the field of marine and coastal nature-based solutions, also with a view to the negotiations on the EU Carbon Removal Certification Framework.
