From 1st to 12th December 2014 the 20th international climate negotiations of the United Nations will be taking place in Lima (Peru). On behalf of the European Parliament, Oeko-Institut has produced an overview of the most important issues in the negotiations. The researchers provide a summary of the core topics in the negotiations, the developments since the last climate conference in 2013, and the positions of individual countries as well as different country and interest groups.

The most important goal in Lima will be to define key parameters for a legally binding agreement to be negotiated by 2015. The agreement is to include all countries and it will come into effect in 2020. In the negotiations discussions will mainly revolve around the commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as the design of other important aspects of the new agreement like the provision of financial support to developing countries, forest protection and measures to adapt to climate change.
