Professional Training and Career

  • Studies in electrical engineering at the Leipzig University of Technology, Graduation as Diplom-Ingenieur in 1985. 1999 Doctorate (“summa cum laude”, political science) at the Free University Berlin.
  • Since 1990 Senior scientist at Oeko-Institut and responsible also for the set up of the Berlin branch.
  • 1993: Study visit to the USA as fellow of the German Marshall Fund of the United States
  • 1997-2008: Coordinator of the Energy & Climate Division and 2002-2004 Deputy Director.
  • 2000-2003: Scientific Member of the Study Commission (Enquete Commission) „Sustainable Energy in the Framework of Globalization and Liberalization“ of the 14th German Bundestag (German Federal Parliament).
  • 2007/2008: Visiting scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change), Cambridge, MA (USA).
  • since 2009: Research Coordinator for Energy and Climate Policy at Oeko-Institut
  • 2011: Member of the European Commission Directorate General for Energy Advisory Group on the Energy Roadmap 2050.
  • 2016-2018: Member of the German Japanese Energy Transition Council (GJETC)
  • 2018: Member of the German Federal Government’s Commission “Growth, structural change und employment” (“Coal Commission”)
  • Member of Gesellschaft für Energiewissenschaft und Energiepolitik (German branch of the International Association for Energy Economics), Member of Deutsche Vereinigung für Politische Wissenschaft (DVPW – German Association of Policy Science)
