Study on the potential impacts of integrating CRCF temporary carbon sequestration units in policy options incentivising climate action across the agri-food value chain

This project involves developing a report that assesses the risks and opportunities of integrating temporary carbon farming sequestration units, generated under the CRCF, into the proposed agri-food policies of DG CLIMA. The report

  • outlines the challenges associated with crediting temporary carbon farming sequestration and the weaknesses in the relevant draft certification methodologies proposed by the European Commission under the CRCF (drafts made available in April 2025),
  • assesses the impact of proposed agri-food policy options (AgETS, mandatory climate standards, and public procurement) on carbon farming implementation and the impact on overall mitigation efforts across the agri-food value chain,
  • provides an evidence-based analysis of the risks, opportunities, and challenges of integrating CRCF temporary carbon farming sequestration units into the proposed agri-food policy options,
  • discusses overlaps between the CRCF and the Common Agricultural Policy and proposes different options for linking the two policies, and
  • assesses alternative policy options to appropriately promote temporary carbon sequestration actions through activity-based approaches.
