Socioeconomic issues of extended storage in the context of high-radioactive waste management

Storage for high active waste (HAW) serves as the link between the generation of HAW and its transfer to a final repository. This creates interdependencies that influence the future development of the regions hosting interim storage facilities. Decentralized interim storage regions with nuclear power plants currently undergoing decommissioning are already experiencing structural change. The region’s economic development also depends, for example, on public perceptions of safety regarding extended storage.

The project explores socio-economic factors and analyzes international case studies to this end. It also examines what a vision for the future of an interim storage region might look like.
