The coronavirus pandemic and its economic consequences have tested the resilience of our society's central care systems. Weak points have been revealed, points that raise acute questions about more resilient design for expected future crises. No less acute is the political debate about the ecological and social sustainability of such supply systems.
The project combines the challenges of resilience and sustainability and seeks to identify which strategies and measures can strengthen both (synergies) or where contradictions arise (trade-offs).
The study is limited to the food and energy sectors. Three strategies are analysed that appear to be particularly relevant to these areas and that offer intersections between resilience and sustainability: Regionalization, diversification and the provision of back-up structures. The project concludes with recommendations for both politics and business.
