Preparation of life cycle assessments of various agreed EDGEPOWER devices according to ISO 14040/44

Two projects are to be realised within the framework of the BMBF project "Edge Power": On the one hand, future high-performance sensors for process monitoring will no longer send data via cable to a central server, as is the case today, but via 5G to decentralised computing cores (edge computing). The decentralised computing core can work more efficiently and requires less energy than the server. On the other hand, the energy required for the transmission of the data and the computing power of the computing cores is to be provided as far as possible by using regenerative energies (solar or wind) at the industrial site. In this project, the Öko-Institut is preparing the accompanying carbon footprint for an initial assessment of the possible savings of GHG emissions through this approach. For this purpose, the "conventional" state with data transmission via copper cables to a central server is compared with the edge power scenario.
