Implementation and execution of the programme to increase acceptance of climate protection in rural areas

1 Aims and objectives

From March 2025 to February 2027, a consortium of nine regional partner organisations from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will run the programme “ MV tut was. Klimaschutz vor Ort: Sichtbar machen. Menschen unterstützen. Teilhabe fördern ”. The aim is to strengthen participation and climate protection in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The objective is to provide local authorities, citizens, businesses and initiatives with opportunities that support them in their efforts to cooperatively develop a liveable, social and climate-friendly future.

The Öko-Institut, Resources & Mobility Division, is supporting the entire programme in cooperation with the ROSIS- Rostocker Institut für Sozialforschung und gesellschaftliche Praxis e.V. . In doing so, we are evaluating the various measures in terms of their acceptance and effectiveness.

The aim is to actively support and research the public discourse on sustainable transformation in rural areas, involving all regional stakeholders.

2 Approach

The Öko-Institut is conducting a standardised survey of all participants involved in the project in order to assess and evaluate the impacts and effectiveness of the various participatory formats implemented within the project. The focus here is on outputs and outcomes. In addition, ROSIS provides scientific support for the programme through participant observation and problem-centred interviews with relevant programme stakeholders. The evaluation centres on questions such as:

How can interest in climate protection issues and measures be stimulated?

  • How can local stakeholders be involved in the planning and design of climate protection measures? Which of the tools used are particularly suitable for this?
  • In what ways do the programme’s participatory tools contribute to improving acceptance?
