The 2006 FIFA World Cup

is expected to attract over 3.2 million spectators from Germany and abroad to the 64 matches, which will result in a considerable volume of traffic. There are also other areas that have an impact on the environment: Electricity and water are needed in the stadiums, and waste has to be disposed of.

To minimise the negative effects on the environment, the 2006 FIFA World Cup

TM

is to be the first sporting event of a new generation: Green Goal

TM

, the environmental concept for the 2006 FIFA World Cup

TM

developed by the Öko-Institut on behalf of the Organising Committee, envisages a neutral carbon footprint.
