Climate neutrality in the health sector: Case study-based carbon footprint assessment according to GHG Protocol and potential analysis of climate protection measures in hospital operations

In the CAFOGES study, the specific GHG emissions in hospital operations were analysed for the first time and a valid and easy-to-use tool for calculating GHG emissions was developed for German hospitals in order to determine relevant factors influencing the carbon footprint. The calculations were mainly carried out at product/process level (bottom-up), e.g. using consumption analyses (purchasing area) or calculated transport routes in the mobility area. Where not possible, expenditure-based (top-down) methods were used (CO2e/€). Overall, due to the fusion of both methods, this is a hybrid assessment.
