Citizen energy cooperatives as pioneers of the social energy and heating transition – challenges and opportunities

The project systematically examines the role of energy cooperatives as enablers of a social electricity and heating transition. It analyses both existing challenges and new options for action. The focus is on the following questions:

  1. What requirements and basic principles characterise a socially just energy and heating transition?
  2. What contribution do energy cooperatives make to the social dimension of the transition – and where are their limits?
  3. What measures can cooperatives take to strengthen social participation and supply more households with climate-friendly energy and heating?
  4. What political and regulatory framework conditions are necessary to unlock the social potential of citizen energy cooperatives
