Affordable and low environmental impact housing bymore efficient use of existing building stock

The project, 'Affordable and low environmental impact housing through the more efficient use of existing building stock', funded by DG ENV, incorporates sufficiency measures, such as repurposing, densification and space sharing, into housing and climate strategies at EU, national and local levels in order to address the ongoing housing and climate crises across Europe.

The project provides an evidence-based foundation for sufficiency measures. This is achieved through a comprehensive taxonomy of measures, an analysis of their environmental, social and economic benefits, the development of a monitoring framework for vacant and underused spaces at the municipal level, the quantitative assessment of the affordable housing potential achievable through sufficiency-related policy adjustments and the design of an EU-wide digital knowledge base platform to share successful practices. Data and knowledge will i.a. be obtained from eight comparative case studies, which will include an evaluation of whole-life carbon emissions compared to new builds.
