Water protection is a human right

    Press releases 09/10/2025

Water is a vital resource for people, nature and the economy. But this resource is under pressure worldwide: changes in precipitation patterns, extreme weather events and the increasing water needs of agriculture, industry and households are leading to shortages and pollution. However, global companies have failed to systematically take water risks into account to date, even though there are substantial dangers in global supply chains in particular. A recent study conducted by Oeko-Institut shows that the strategic importance of water is often still low.

Social leasing: How access to electric vehicles can be achieved even without a high income

    Press releases 05/14/2025

Climate protection in the transport sector can only succeed if electric vehicles are affordable for all population groups that are dependent on a car. A recent study conducted by Oeko-Institut on behalf of Transport & Environment shows that a social leasing scheme can be a useful component in a package of measures for a socially just transition of the transport sector. To achieve this, low-income households must be given targeted support in switching to electromobility – especially when there are no attractive alternatives to owning a car.

Shaping international cooperation together with partners

    Press releases 01/25/2024

Good cooperation in international projects is always about give and take. The Oeko-Institut has been working with partners and networks in Africa, Asia and Latin America for many years. However, this type of project involves much more than conventional forms of consultancy and science. In most cases, the Institute works closely with local partners who operate on a scientific and value-oriented basis, much like the Oeko-Institut itself, and have established good local networks. Problems and potential solutions are jointly analysed and discussed before being taken forward by stakeholders in the countries concerned. How do international projects work? Which mutual interests are involved, and how has the nature of this cooperation changed over the years? In the new episode of the Oeko-Institut’s “Wenden bitte!!” podcast, Senior Researcher Andreas Manhart provides some answers.

    Financial rewards for forest conservation

    Press releases 08/04/2022

An incentive system providing financial rewards for biodiversity and carbon sink services in forests can rest on two pillars: On the one hand, such a system should fund ecological forest management directly. On the other, it should provide additional funding for carbon sink services in forests by means of a market-based certificate scheme. Working with a team of forest scientists and researchers in further natural sciences and legal experts, the Oeko-Institut has now completed a study on behalf of the German Federal Environment Agency UBA that outlines a modular incentive system.
