Is everyone on board with social climate action?

In recent years social climate action has moved ever more to the fore of public discourse – not least because everyone is called upon to play their part in the urgently needed reduction of emissions in transport and buildings. But what to do if there is simply no money to replace the old combustion-engine vehicle with an electric car? What about those who are tenants and have no say in whether the energy performance of their flat is improved or not? In the present issue of eco@work we take a close look at social climate protection – in all its dimensions and preconditions, and its effective instruments.

EU Climate Target 2040: Assessment of the Commission Proposal

On 2 July 2025, the European Commission presented its proposal for the EU’s 2040 climate target as well as for the revision of the European Climate Law. The draft foresees a 90 percent reduction in net greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990 levels. This is a key milestone on the EU’s path to achieving climate neutrality by 2050. At the same time, however, the proposal includes “flexibilities” that, according to analyses by Oeko-Institut, could weaken the impact of real emission reductions.

Revised methodologies under the EU Carbon Certification Removal Framework continue to lack integrity

In March and April 2025, the European Commission presented revised methodologies for the European Union’s Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF). The methodologies continue to set a much lower standard than the Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism and best practice in the voluntary carbon market. If the European Commission does not fundamentally improve these methodologies, the vast majority of CRCF units will not represent any actual emission reductions or removals.
