Five measures to reduce material demand for the transport transition

News 10/19/2026

The European Union can substantially reduce the raw material demand for electric vehicles and thereby decrease its dependence on raw material imports and new mining activities. This is demonstrated by a new study conducted by Oeko-Institut on behalf of SOMO, Seas At Risk and PowerShift. The study examines potential technical improvements and how more sustainable mobility patterns can contribute to reducing raw material consumption. It also analyses relevant EU-level policy entry points for implementing these measures. The analysis focuses on five priority measures: battery recycling, vehicle downsizing, improved energy efficiency, modal shift and travel avoidance.

CCS – A useful climate protection measure?

News 09/15/2026

The capture, transport and safe storage of carbon dioxide, as well as its utilisation – also known as carbon capture and storage (CCS) and carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) – are intended to support the path to climate neutrality. However, the use of this technology is the subject of heated debate due to concerns that CCS could hinder necessary climate protection efforts, as well as potential environmental impacts. What role can CCS play in effective, af-fordable climate protection? Where would it be sensible to use this technology? Where could CO₂ be stored in Germany? We address these questions in the latest issue of eco@work.
