The institut’s Divisions are the pillars of its scientific activities. It is here that research is conducted, and it is here that new project ideas are developed. Each Division manages its budget largely autonomously and must be financially self-sustaining. This means that each must itself acquire, through commissions or grants, the funding it needs to carry out its work.
Energy & Climate
The principal aim of the Energy & Climate Division is to mitigate the environmental and nuclear risks arising from energy use.
Nuclear Engineering & Facility Safety
The researchers of our Nuclear Engineering & Facility Safety Division work on cutting-edge issues of nuclear engineering and conventional technologies by conducting studies and producing reports, providing advisory services and cooperating in expert bodies.
Sustainable Products & Material Flows
Our Sustainable Products & Material Flows Division concentrates on sustainable consumption and production, chemicals management and technology assessment.
Resources & Transport
The Resources & Transport Division has been working intensively and successfully for many years on four major thematic complexes, finding solutions to the key questions: How can mobility be shaped sustainably and which technical and logistic measures need to be put in place in which manner in both passenger travel and freight transport?
Environmental Law & Governance
Our Environmental Law & Governance Division addresses legal and social-science – including economic – questions which are fundamental to sustainable environmental policy.
