Impact of COVID-19 on single-use plastics and the environment in Europe

The objective of this project is to assess the impact on the consumption, production and environmental challenges of single-use plastics in Europe due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The focus is on single-use face masks, gloves and plastic packaging of take-away food and online sales. More specifically, the report determines and assesses the already observed and potential future impacts of COVID-19 on:

  • the production, consumption and trade of single-use plastics in Europe;
  • the estimated environmental and climate impacts associated with the additional use of single-use plastics in Europe;
  • the achievement of European policy objectives related to single-use plastics.

In workshops interested EEA member countries provided input and their practical experiences to the report. The report and outcomes of the workshops provide the basis for a separate EEA briefing.
