Evaluation of the answers from the Belgian Authority FANC to 15 questions concerning indications in Belgian NPPs submitted by the German delegation during the workshop of January 11th and 12th 2016

In 2012 nearly 9000 indications were identified during ultra sonic inspections of the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) in the Belgian NPP Doel 3. Similar defects in lesser numbers were subsequently discovered in the Belgian NPP Tihange 2. Based on extensive research the operator and the authority believe that these defects are hydrogen flakes. A very complex multi-step process was started to prove the structural integrity of the Belgian RPVs.

On the occasion of an international workshop on the crack findings on January 11th and 12th 2016 the German delegation submitted 15 questions to the Belgian Autority FANC. By letter of 18 February 2016, the FANC sent its reply to the Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety . The Ministry of Environment of North Rhine-Westphalia has commissioned the Öko-Institut with a review of the responses of the FANC .
