Comparative Analysis of the Czech Repository Criteria

In the Czech Republic, the preferred site for a repository for spent fuel elements and high-level radioactive waste is to be designated from currently 9 site areas by 2025. Several siting options are located near the provinces of Upper Austria and Lower Austria, which are therefore particularly interested in a safety-oriented selection of locations. In our analysis of the criteria for the comparison of sites, we come to the following results: The catalogue of criteria drawn up by the operator is thematically com-prehensive. However, difficulties lie in the application and weighting: limited site-specific knowledge hardly allows a differentiation of safety-related geological features of the sites. Non-safety-related criteria could therefore have an undue influence on the exclusion of options. Furthermore, the suitability of the repository concept is still unclear.
