abstract = {During the summer of 2011, the German government decided with the so-called “energy turnaround” to discontinue the use of nuclear power and to shift the provision of energy to renewable energy sources, step by step. Moreover, the decision provides for a massive improvement in the energy efficiency of buildings, machinery and facilities and the expansion of combined heat and power generation. The realization of these objectives is a decisive prerequisite if Germany is to achieve the fast and extensive reduction of its greenhouse gas emissions required from the perspective of global climate protection.}
