abstract = {Energy communities are increasingly gaining importance in Spain’s shift toward sustainable energy systems. The European Union (EU) directives 2018/2011 and 2019/ 944 (Directive, 2019) introduced the concept of Renewable Energy Communities (REC) and Citizen Energy Communities (CEC). Spain has adopted both concepts under the term of Local Energy Communities. This framework enables individuals and entities, including municipalities and cooperatives, to actively participate in energy production and distribution beyond mere consumption. Research by Romero- Mu~noz et al. (2023) discusses the challenges and opportunities associated with institutionalizing these communities within Spain’s energy framework. Additionally, a study by Atutxa et al. (2020) examines the scalability of low-carbon energy communities in Spain, analyzing various collective initiatives progressing toward a sustainable  and resilient energy model. Furthermore, Gallego-Castillo et al. (2021) performed a regional analysis of optimal self-consumption installations under Spain’s new legal framework, highlighting the economic benefits for self-consumers across the country.},
