Call for Evening Lecture Papers and Classroom/Participation Sessions
2013 AGS Conference - Willamette University, Salem, Oregon

Proposals are solicited for scholarly papers, 25 minutes in length, to be presented during the Evening Lectures. Please send your proposal and a 250-word abstract by February 1, 2013 to Lecture Programs Coordinators: Bob Keeler, robertk@clackamas.edu or Judy Juntunen, rycraftjuntunen@aol.com.

Proposals are solicited for Participation/Class Sessions, of 45 minutes in length, to be presented Thursday, June 20 and Friday, June 21. This year we are focusing the classroom/participation sessions on "how-to" topics. Examples might be long-range planning, volunteer management, and using cemeteries in education. These sessions are not for presenting research papers unless it's about how to do a particular type of research using the presenter's research as a case study. We encourage panel discussions and will allow more than one time slot if needed. Please send your proposal and a 250-word abstract by February 1, 2013 to Participation/Class Sessions Coordinators: ob Keeler, robertk@clackamas.edu or Judy Juntunen, rycraftjuntunen@aol.com.

Be thinking about a Late Night Presentation...This year the time slot for Late Night presentations is 15 minutes. Of course, it doesn't have to be that long. When you register for the 2013 AGS Conference, be sure to indicate if you would like to present, and your topic. John O'Brien, jobriend837@comcast.net, is in charge of Late Night.

Students -- It's time to enter the 2013 AGS Student Paper Competition

Students: Earn a chance to attend the AGS Conference and Annual Meeting as a guest of AGS. Enter the AGS Student Paper Competition.

Requirements: The applicant must either be a graduate or undergraduate student at an accredited college or university, as well as a member of the AGS.

Application: The application will consist of the title, abstract and text for a scholarly paper suitable for presentation at the Friday Lecture Session. The entry should be in the exact form that it will be delivered at the conference, including visuals. It should be a twenty-minute presentation. PowerPoint is the preferred presentation medium.

The award will cover registration, plus room and board for the full conference (about $525) and will include a cash prize of $300, which will be presented at the conference.

The recipient of this award will be expected to present the paper during the Friday evening lecture session, June 21, 2013.

Deadline: March 31, 2013

Your entry should consist of a cover letter with a PDF attachment, emailed to Bob Drinkwater c/o info@gravestonestudies.org.

AGS Chapter Meetings:

Alabama: December 8, 2012, Huntsville, Alabama

The next AGS Alabama chapter meeting will be December 8 in Huntsville, hosted by Tennessee Valley Archaeological Research. Ann Marshall and Hunter Johnson will be coordinating the event which will include interesting presentations, a fun lunch, and a great guided cemetery tour in the afternoon.

MORNING SESSION
The meeting begins at 9 a.m. TVAR will provide a light breakfast and continuing coffeepot. We will start off with informal slideshows/PowerPoints of interesting cemeteries and gravestones in the morning. Dr. Ian Brown is coordinating the morning session presentations, so please contact him at ibrown@bama.ua.edu and send him a title so he can get you on the program. Remember, these are informal presentations about 20 minutes long, so it's a good chance to tell and show what you know without pressure. We're all in this together and want to learn about the interesting cemeteries in our state.

LUNCH
We will order lunch from The Happy Tummy deli in the Mill. It has unique and very fresh food (see their menu at www.mmmhappytummy.com). After lunch we'll have a chance to stroll through the Lowe Mill, which now has more than 100 artists and studios exhibiting their wares (check out www.LoweMill.net).

AFTERNOON CEMETERY TOUR
After lunch, it's on to Decatur to tour the small c. 1818 Lafayette Street, the oldest cemetery in the city which was damaged during the Battle of Decatur. A descendant of those interred wrote the University of Alabama Fight Song. Then we have a guided tour of Decatur City Cemetery (c. 1851 to the present). This is a cemetery with thousands of graves, historic personages (from the local madame to the Scottsboro Boys trial judge), and a wide variety of graves and markers illuminating social and cultural change of more than a century.

We will be providing participants with hotel information in the near future. It is recommended that you come on Friday, and stay Saturday night as well if you can. If anyone would like to come in Friday night, we will make reservations for a group dinner at a fun Huntsville restaurant.

Northeast New England Chapter: November 11, 2012

The next NENE (Northeast New England) Chapter of AGS meeting will be November 11, 2012 from 1 to 5PM in Portsmouth, NH at the Discover Portsmouth Center in the Community Room.

To get to the Discover Portsmouth Center:
10 Middle Street at the intersection of Islington and Congress Streets. This is part of the main business and historic district. There is metered parking across the street (free handicap parking).
